In a Minute There Is Time

11 Aug

Do I dare
Disturb the universe?
In a minute there is time
For decisions and revisions which a minute will reverse

~T.S. Eliot, from The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock (1919)

Sometimes we forget how much we can accomplish in a short time. A minute doesn’t seem very long – and yet it is long enough.

Make a decision. Make a revision. Improve your life. Improve the life of another person. It will only take a minute.

In a minute you can invest in a small business, solve a problem, tighten a screw, compliment someone, water a plant, wipe the kitchen counter, or even create a new life!

In another minute, somewhere on Earth, a business will fail, someone will receive an insult, a screw will be loosened, a plant will dry up, a counter will become sticky, and someone will most definitely die. In fact, across the globe, these things will happen many times over, and some of them may even happen to you.

Do not be discouraged.

The Universe changes with every moment. So do we.

Make a decision. Change something. Make something better than it was. If you act, perhaps your act will be reversed in the next moment, or perhaps it will not. Either way, if you have acted, your decision to act, and the act itself, both existed in that moment.

You were changed in that moment. The Universe was changed in that moment.

Go ahead, disturb the Universe. I dare you. It will only take a minute.

Let us go then, you and I… hello, cleansurface!

hey, i like the last lines esp. the “Go ahead, disturb the Universe.” make a ripple, is that it?

i remember the line in the poem that says “squeeze the universe into a ball.” it reminds me of the modern-day, when things are supposed to be at one’s fingertips, and, how young people tend to believe that they can have most things, all at once.

can blogging be considered disturbing the universe, huh? 🙂

I think blogging is definitely making a ripple, as you say. The poem is a good one. I was tempted to quote more of it, but I didn’t want to lose my focus. Thanks for the comment.

I have found in designing an online course, inspiration strikes and up goes another word file, a photostory or discussion thread idea….in just a minute of time. Over a month of minutes here and there…voilá…a course. Love this!

I have found that also, Georgette; one thing leads to another. This post started because I felt uninspired and decided to just look for quotes about making decisions – because I couldn’t decide what to write about!

I accept your challenge and will do my best to disturb the universe (and perhaps my children) today!

    • Rayme Wells @ A Clean Surface August 12, 2011 at 2:07 pm #

Oh, good. See, I have already affected your children and I don’t even know them. =)

If you have kids, I’ll gladly return the favor : )

Terrific post…. that’s one of my favorite poems AND I think you just gave me a swift, spiritual kick to the head. I might print this out and post it on my wall so I can read it every now and again and remind myself to stop wasting all my time. 😀

Thank you so much, Mackenzie – because of your comment I have added a “print” button. See, you changed something already!

What an uplifting minute of inspiration!

I choose to use my minute doing absolutely nothing. Little bits of peace have value, right?

Thanks for reminding us that even in a minute, we have the power to move closer to our goals or even get over a goal that we have missed. There’s always time for a 2nd chance.

Yes! Good reminder, especially in these economically challenging times.

I have discovered that the Universe LIKES to be poked and prodded, but also thanked for the gifts (like my giant bookcase!).

[…] One Minute August 24, 2011 Filed under: Blog Entries,Show and Tell — TheBudgetMaven @ 12:00 am Tags: busy schedule, overbooked time, Time and Money Earlier in the week, we talked about how time (or lack thereof) can cost you money. I know what you’re thinking.  So what, I’m a little busy and haven’t seen the inside of my kitchen in two weeks? Does it really matter that I wasted 20 bucks on something I didn’t need and now don’t even want?  What can an overbooked minute here or there really be costing me?  Check out this post from a Clean Surface’s Rayme Wells on the actual worth of a minute. “In a Minute, There is Time.” […]
